This year will be the second year C1 Cattle will be selling bulls on the Dethlefs/Treffer annual production sale. A highlight of the year was exhibiting three bulls at Husker Harvest days for the first time. The ranch is located in the southern hills of Custer county where our 40 registered cows roam and around 150 commercial cows of Ben's dad (Ramon) and uncle (Paul). Besides the cows, a trusty horse Hero and young filly Nala, two dogs Boone and Koda, and many chickens call these hills home. In their spare time the Johnson's enjoy getting together with friends, doing all things outdoors, and spending their summer evenings at the South Loup River.
Growing up a 5th generation cattle producer, Ben always knew that he wanted to raise Angus cattle. His dream became a reality in 2006 when he bought his first Angus bull from Ostrand Angus and he bought the C1 brand, which has been through all 5 generations, from his Grandpa Darrell Nelson. For many years Ben worked as a ranch hand for Kory and Danielle Ostrand and treasures all of the knowledge he has gained from his experiences with Ostrand Angus. From 2018-2022 he sold bulls on their sale and has continued to grow his herd ever since.
In the summer of 2022 Ben married his right hand lady, Emily Dethlefs. Emily is a 4th generation Angus producer (Dad- Craig, Grandpa - Dutch) and grew up showing cattle at the local, state, and national levels. After getting married Emily's cows got to move to their new home on the C1 Cattle Ranch which meant adding Dethlefs Angus genetics to the herd. In 2023, the future ranch hand, Noah, was born and we are excited to keep the tradition going of raising quality Angus cattle.
